New York Clipper (January 3, 1857)
The New York Clipper, Vol. IV, No. 37 (January 3, 1857), four cents. This issue features an ornamental masthead depicting riverside and urban scenes, above an engraved portrait block of four male figures identified as "Champion Light Weight Oarsmen." The page displays the dense, column-heavy layout typical of mid-19th-century periodicals, with small type and minimal white space. Founded as the leading trade weekly covering American popular entertainment—theater, minstrelsy, circus, prizefighting, horse racing, billiards, and baseball—the Clipper served as a pictorial newspaper for a mass audience hungry for images and news of sporting and theatrical celebrities. Its heavily illustrated format and accessible coverage of entertainment made it a commercial success and a direct predecessor to later trade publications like Variety and Billboard.
