New York Clipper, Vol. IV, No. 11
The New York Clipper, Vol. IV, No. 11 (July 5, 1856) exemplifies the leading American trade weekly devoted to theatrical and sporting entertainment. The masthead features an ornamental title treatment flanked by classical figures, with an engraved scene above depicting waterfront activity and crowds. Below, a wood-engraved illustration shows the Fashion Course on Long Island during a four-mile horse race on June 18, 1855, rendered in the detailed documentary style characteristic of mid-century sporting journalism. Dense columns of small type fill the interior pages, covering turf racing, prizefighting, billiards, minstrelsy, circus performances, and early baseball. The Clipper served as the primary illustrated newsstand weekly through which a mass audience encountered sporting news and theatrical personalities, establishing the pictorial journalism model later adopted by Variety and Billboard.
