Vanity Fair, Vol. 6, No. 133
· Saturday, July 12, 1862

Wood engraving depicting General G. P. Morris as a caricatured figure drawing a bow and arrow, with a small boy soldier standing nearby. The title reads "The Bard who best gives Timbre to Song." Published during the American Civil War, this issue of the New York satirical weekly lampooned Union political figures and military personalities through comic verse and graphic caricature. Operating from 1859 to 1863, Vanity Fair employed wood-block printing to distribute topical humor and political commentary to readers on the Northern home front, establishing conventions that would define American comic journalism for generations to come.
