Young Folk's Weekly Budget, Vol. XIII, No. 416
· November 23, 1878

Young Folk's Weekly Budget was a British penny weekly that serialized adventure fiction, historical romance, and school stories for boys from the 1870s onward. This cover for "Kairon, the Young Charioteer"—a classical adventure serial—depicts a dramatic scene: a robed warrior raises his arm in triumph while older men in military dress and what appears to be an enslaved figure observe from within a tent. The woodcut style illustration, typical of the publication's visual storytelling, showcases the heroic narratives of conquest and antiquity that defined the paper's appeal to working-class youth. Young Folk's Weekly Budget offered serialized tales of exotic lands, martial glory, and youthful heroism at an affordable price, making adventure fiction accessible to readers across social classes during the Victorian era.
