Young Folk's Weekly Budget
Young Folk's Weekly Budget, Vol. XIII, No. 401 (1878) This cover depicts a fantastical encounter: a young man in period military dress confronts a scaled, winged creature with orange hair emerging from turbulent waters. The illustration accompanies "Marvel-Land; Winfred's Wondrous Wanderings," a serial adventure by B. Mitford. Young Folk's Weekly Budget was a British penny paper that serialized tales of adventure, historical romance, and exploration for young readers throughout the late nineteenth century. Each issue combined woodcut and hand-colored illustrations with episodic narratives—often featuring imperial settings, exotic locales, and encounters with fantastical beings. These cheap weeklies reached mass audiences of boys and girls, offering accessible entertainment through adventure fiction that mixed the plausible with the extraordinary.
