The ornate title treatment and densely packed columns of type were typical of the era's cheap serials, which preceded and established many conventions of modern comics: episodic storytelling, illustrated covers, cliffhangers, and an appetite for adventure and transgression among ordinary readers. These pulp narratives democratized fiction and shaped popular narrative forms for generations.
