The Carpet-Bag, Vol. II, No. 2

The Carpet-Bag (1851–1853) was a Boston weekly devoted to comic sketches, burlesque, tall tales, and light verse. Edited by Benjamin Penhallow Shillaber, creator of the character Mrs. Partington, the paper printed woodcut illustrations alongside comic fiction and humorous commentary. Its pages introduced Mark Twain's first nationally-circulated sketch and early work by Artemus Ward. The masthead employs ornamental borders typical of mid-century periodicals; interior pages mix dense columns of text with scattered woodcut vignettes. As a literary humor weekly rather than a sensational paper, *The Carpet-Bag* occupied a distinct place in American comic publishing, bridging the tradition of 19th-century newspaper humor and the emerging mass market for comedy and satire.
