The Carpet-Bag, Vol. II, No. 18
· July 31, 1852

The Carpet-Bag's ornamental masthead features a hand grasping a decorative valise, flanked by two woodcut vignettes of domestic life. This Boston weekly (1851–1853) combined literary humor, burlesque tales, light verse, and wood-engraved sketches—a format that drew readers seeking comedy and satire beyond the penny dreadfuls of the era. Edited by Benjamin Penhallow Shillaber, creator of the character Mrs. Partington, The Carpet-Bag published early work by Mark Twain and Artemus Ward, establishing itself as a venue for comic writing that mixed topical jest with narrative invention. The publication represents a mid-nineteenth-century American humor tradition that valued wit, wordplay, and illustrative caricature as entertainment for a literate urban audience.
