This Boston weekly (1851–1853) mixed literary humor, tall tales, burlesque sketches, and light verse for a general audience. Editor Benjamin Penhallow Shillaber filled its pages with comedic character writing and visual caricature, establishing a platform for emerging American humorists including Mark Twain and Artemus Ward. The Carpet-Bag occupied the middle ground of antebellum print culture—neither high literature nor sensation fiction, but a vehicle for oral humor traditions translated into print, with woodcut illustration as integral to the comedic effect as text.
