Catalog Entry
*Old Shadow-Shot*, featured serial. The narrative follows Nightingale Nat, a singing boy driving oxen with a frontier wagon train bound for Lake Superior's mining country under the command of the brutal Captain Rough. When Nat's enthusiastic singing draws the ire of the impatient captain, a mysterious stranger named Old Shadow-Shot intervenes to prevent the boy's whipping, declaring himself protector of the youth. The train is simultaneously threatened by attack from a brigand gang called the "Vultures of the Woods," led by Captain Dave, who have destroyed other expeditions along the Wisconsin forest trail. The narrative combines adventure elements—frontier travel, impending Indian conflict, and outlaw danger—with character drama centering on Nat's mistreatment and unexpected rescue by the eccentric Shadow-Shot. The serial emphasizes wilderness peril and moral contrasts between brutal authority and frontier honor.
