Street and Smith's New York Weekly
· January 31, 1881

This penny weekly serialized melodramatic fiction for working-class readers at minimal cost. The cover features two wood-engraved scenes: a violent confrontation between men in an interior, and a couple on a frozen lake. Such publications dominated Victorian popular reading, offering weekly installments of crime, passion, and supernatural mystery. These cheap serials, produced by the millions, relied on sensational plots and crude illustration to attract readers hungry for excitement beyond their daily lives. The format—serialized stories, serialized readership—directly prefigures the modern comic book's episodic structure and mass-market appeal. Street and Smith would later pioneer pulp magazines and comic publishing, cementing their role as architects of popular narrative for ordinary people.
