Leggett carefully monitors Sanders from prison through Washington, using multiple disguised operatives—farmer, peddler, and railroad workers—maintaining constant watch. When Sanders mysteriously produces a fifty-dollar bill at Savoni's restaurant despite possessing minimal funds, the officers are baffled. Bank president Bowton, doubting the local authorities' competence, travels to New York to consult the renowned detective Nick Carter. Carter accepts the case and hints he understands the novel robbery method used to breach the vault and inner safe—accomplished, he claims, through a new technique unknown to police.
