Pickwick in der Fremde (Pickwick Abroad)

Museum Catalog Note This is the fifth and sixth installments of a German translation of G.W.M. Reynolds's *Pickwick in der Fremde* (Pickwick Abroad), adapted by Dr. F. Herrig and published in Brunswick by Eduard Leibrock, 1841. The narrative follows Pickwick and his companions in France. Chapter 45 depicts a court case: Walker, in financial straits, schemes with the poet Septimus Chitty; Siffkin beats Walker in the Tuileries Gardens over disputed claims about Madam Weston, then flees France to avoid imprisonment, leaving a letter in a gazette. Pickwick and Snodgras attend a hearing at the Palais de Justice. Meanwhile, their carriage disappears (the horse wandered off), and they are arrested on suspicion of theft, accused by the driver. They encounter an English criminal also under interrogation who boasts of robberies and theft. The carriage is recovered nearby, and Pickwick and Snodgras are exonerated. Chapter 46 announces Pickwick's impending marriage to Madam Weston on October 4, 1835, featuring domestic preparations and dialogue between Pickwick and his servant Sam.
