This studio photograph by Mathew Brady—America's preeminent Civil War portraitist—shows a young Thomas Nast in three-quarter profile, seated beside a draped armchair. He wears a dark frock coat, his dark hair swept long, a goatee and mustache marking his face. The image is a glass-plate negative, its cracked and scratched surface visible around the edges, lending the portrait a fragile, archival presence. Nast was in his early twenties here, already contributing to *Harper's Weekly*, the illustrated journal where he would spend two decades reshaping American political life through pen and ink rather than the lens.
