Effect of the Vote on the Eleventh Article of Impeachment
Thomas Nast · May 30, 1868

A split plate sets triumph against collapse. Left panel, captioned Elevation — At the White House, shows Andrew Johnson in royal crown and ermine-trimmed robes, brandishing a bottle labeled *Bourbon* and a key marked *MY*, dancing in self-congratulation — Nast's indictment of Johnson's monarchical pretensions and his alliance with conservative Southern Democrats. Right panel, Depression — At the Tribune Office, depicts a cluster of Radical Republican editors and politicians physically crumpling with grief after the Senate's 35–19 vote fell one short of the two-thirds needed to convict. Johnson escapes; Reconstruction's champions reel.
