Bătrână (Old Woman)

Jiquidi, Constantin · 1898

Bătrână (Old Woman)
This ink sketch depicts a hunched elderly woman in tattered clothing, leaning on a cane—a figure type common to European satirical tradition. The artist employs quick, expressive strokes to capture both physical deformity and social condition, rendering age and poverty through exaggerated features and distressed garments. The work reflects the 19th-century caricature lineage descending from Hogarth and Gillray through Daumier, wherein social types—the aged poor, the infirm, the marginalized—served as subjects for both moral commentary and entertainment. Such character studies, whether standalone sketches or integrated into narrative sequences, became foundational to early comic art.
