Portrait of a Jew
Jiquidi, Constantin · 1894

This watercolor caricature depicts a bearded man in worn clothing and a patched coat, rendered with exaggerated facial features. The work employs the caricature tradition descended from Hogarth and Daumier. The artist uses watercolor's fluid technique to suggest poverty and marginalization through tattered garments, pronounced nose, and disheveled appearance. This caricature represents the commercial print tradition of social and political satire from the late 19th century.
