Almanach du Charivari, 5me Année
This hand-colored lithograph serves as the cover of an annual French satirical almanac, continuing a tradition of political humor rooted in Gillray and Rowlandson. The composition teems with caricatured figures engaged in absurd scenes—a woman on horseback, dancing skeletal forms, and figures in exaggerated poses—rendered in ink line with watercolor tints. The design exemplifies the Charivari style: biting social commentary through grotesque distortion and physical comedy. Such picture-sheets, following the German *Bilderbogen* tradition and the work of Daumier, populated parlors and streets across Europe, democratizing political satire. The almanac format allowed artists to package multiple jokes and observations into affordable, collectable objects that anticipated the sequential humor and visual narrative strategies later central to comic strips and graphic storytelling.
