A Family Returns from Holiday
· 1835

George Cruikshank's wood engraving after the monogrammed designer "S.K." depicts a bourgeois drawing room in chaos: a fashionably dressed woman recoils, children clutch toys, an older woman hunches in her bonnet, and a Black servant hauls luggage while smoke billows from a fireplace. The household's collective misery on homecoming is the joke. Cruikshank inherited his line from Gillray and Rowlandson: compressed domestic incident, exaggerated physiognomy, class hierarchy written in posture. That same grammar — sequential figures, legible emotion, social satire in cheap print — fed directly into the illustrated penny papers and eventually the comic strip.
