Amor Vincit Omnes
This hand-colored lithograph depicts a robed monk and nun in an intimate embrace, their lips meeting while a cross hangs visibly from the monk's neck. An open book and scattered wheat lie at their feet. The Latin title—"Love Conquers All"—signals the print's satirical target: clerical celibacy vows and Catholic hypocrisy. The work belongs to a long tradition of anti-clerical satire stretching from Hogarth through Gillray to 19th-century European printmakers. Religious institutions faced sustained ridicule across comics, lithographs, and political prints for the perceived gap between professed virtue and actual behavior. This colored lithograph exemplifies how popular prints combined visual caricature with moral argument, laying groundwork for the sequential narrative and social critique later central to comic strips.
