A Missionary Enters a Jungle Where Tribesmen Wait in Ambush
This hand-colored etching or lithograph satirizes Victorian missionary enterprise through the figure of a well-dressed European gentleman confronting indigenous peoples in a cave setting. The composition employs caricature conventions of mid-nineteenth-century print satire. The work participates in a long tradition of European political and social commentary extending from Hogarth and Gillray through Daumier, where humor served as social critique. Here the humor targets either missionary zeal itself or colonial anxieties about "darkest Africa." Such prints, mass-produced and circulated widely, established visual vocabularies that would persist through chromolithograph adventure stories into early comic strips.
