This wood engraving depicts William Ewart Gladstone as an elderly, angular figure precariously balanced in a wheelbarrow, holding a pitchfork and exhaling smoke. The cartoon mocks Gladstone's Midlothian Campaign tour, portraying the Liberal leader as unstable and unfit for power as he pursued the 1880 election. The image exemplifies Victorian political satire's visual vocabulary—grotesque physiognomy, impossible postures, and animal symbolism—inherited from Gillray and Rowlandson. By the late 19th century, such caricature traditions had become the standard language of newspapers and periodicals.
