Leidse Kermis (Leiden Carnival)
· 1864

This Dutch wood engraving depicts student life and urban folly through nine episodic scenes arranged in a grid—a format descended from Hogarth's moral sequences and German Bilderbogen sheets. The central panel shows a theatrical performance or carnival spectacle; surrounding scenes include church interiors, street encounters, domestic interiors, and outdoor gatherings populated by bourgeois figures, students, and working people rendered in period dress. The ornamental borders and decorative vignettes of cherubs frame each scene in period style. Through accumulated detail and social observation rather than exaggerated physiognomy, the print captures student humor and local satirical commentary. This popular format—combining narrative sequence, social types, and humor—established visual storytelling conventions that influenced later comic periodicals and the development of sequential narrative art.
