Een Landvoogd op Reis (A Governor on Tour)
This Dutch wood engraving satirizes colonial governance through six vignettes depicting a governor-general's journey. The scenes—featuring a carriage, boat, camel, dining, and a pavilion—employ exaggerated figures to mock administrative pretense and the absurdities of imperial travel. The style descends from 18th-century satirical printmaking traditions of Hogarth and Gillray, adapted by 19th-century Dutch and German artists for political commentary. As serialized narrative satire, this format bridged the older tradition of single-sheet picture commentary and the emerging sequential visual storytelling that would define modern comics.
