Limburg en Oost-Rijk, of Tweerlei Manier om uit den Duitschen Bond te Treden
This Dutch political cartoon responds to Bismarck's expulsion of Austria from the German Confederation. A caricatured Prussian officer wields a sword against the Austrian ship labeled "Deutsche Vaterland," while a Dutch figure crawls away dragging Limburg and a stone marked "Metall Werken." The print satirizes how European powers, especially the Netherlands, scrambled to position themselves after Prussia's victory in the Austro-Prussian War. Rendered as a wood engraving, the cartoon descends from the 18th-century British satirical tradition of Gillray and Rowlandson, carrying forward the visual language of political caricature—exaggerated anatomy and nationalist symbols—that would influence European comics and political illustration for decades.
