From the Protestant Church Controversy, 1866
This wood engraving satirizes Dutch religious conflict through a maritime scene: a well-dressed man in a boat gestures toward figures struggling in turbulent water below. The composition invokes the satiric tradition of Hogarth and Gillray—using exaggeration, symbolic setting, and visual wit to mock theological disputes and their human cost. The inscription, in Dutch, references doctrinal quarrels consuming institutional energy while ordinary believers flounder. The print exemplifies 19th-century European political caricature's inheritance of earlier print satire: using accessible imagery and crude typography to circulate critique among urban readers. Such broadsheets preceded modern comics in combining text, image, and social commentary for popular consumption.
