Old Warriors at the National Music Festival
· 1863

This Dutch wood engraving satirizes retired military men attending the 1863 National Music Festival. Several elderly officers with canes and prosthetics shuffle toward the festival entrance, their bodies marked by age and war. The artist mocks the incongruity of these former soldiers—symbols of martial vigor—now decrepit and struggling. The print exemplifies 19th-century political satire's tradition of social commentary through bodily caricature, descended from Gillray and Rowlandson's mordant wit. Dutch printmakers deployed such imagery to critique national institutions and their participants, using exaggerated physical characteristics and comic distortion.
