Sinter Klaas in de Tweede Kamer (Saint Nicholas in the Second Chamber)
This wood engraving satirizes Dutch Prime Minister Johan Rudolf Thorbecke as Saint Nicholas, surrounded by political figures holding labels identifying them as Amsterdam, Rotterdam, and other constituencies. The print deploys the traditional Dutch gift-giving figure to mock Thorbecke's parliamentary maneuvering and patronage politics. The composition echoes 18th- and 19th-century European satirical prints—the lineage of Hogarth and Gillray—where allegorical costume and caricatured physiognomies served as vehicles for political critique. As popular graphic commentary on current events, this print represents the direct ancestor of modern editorial cartooning and the visual language that would develop into sequential narrative comics.
