The Last Known Voyage of the Blondin
This Dutch wood engraving depicts a tightrope-walking locomotive, its crew performing acrobatic feats as the train careers along cables strung between markers labeled 'Leden' (Members) and 'Voorzitter' (Chairman). The scene mocks a controversial expropriation law through absurdist imagery: the train's precarious balance mirrors the political tightrope walked by government officials attempting to satisfy competing interests in Rotterdam. The print descends from the 18th- and 19th-century tradition of satirical prints by Hogarth, Gillray, and Daumier, wherein impossible mechanical scenarios and physical comedy embodied institutional folly. Here, the artist renders bureaucratic incompetence as literal gravity-defying absurdity, inviting viewers to recognize the dangerous instability of the legislative process itself.
