Political Satire on Former Ministers
· 1861, Dutch

This wood engraving depicts a young man confronting a well-dressed gentleman while two figures whisper behind them—a scene skewering the Dutch political establishment's revolving-door ministry. The inscription reads: Young man: "My Pa is Minister." Second young man: "Mine too is Minister, and he's also at the Council of State." The satire exposes how numerous former ministers circulated through government positions, treating office as hereditary privilege. Rooted in the Northern European caricature tradition descending from Hogarth and Gillray, this print channels social critique through domestic comedy and physiognomic exaggeration. Such political cartoons populated Dutch and German picture-sheets and newspapers, establishing visual wit as a tool for popular political commentary—a lineage directly inherited by modern editorial cartooning and comic journalism.
