Political Satire on Minister M.H. Godefroi

This wood engraving mocks a Dutch minister through caricature: a rotund, grinning official stands at a gate labeled 'De Kamer' (The Chamber), wielding a long pipe as figures wade in water below. The satire belongs to a long tradition of European political prints—descended from Hogarth and Gillray through Daumier and the German Bilderbogen sheets—that used exaggerated physiognomy and social comedy to lampoon public figures and policy.
