The Last of the Wall-Painters

This Dutch wood engraving by H.L. Smits satirizes the Royal Academy of Sciences, showing two caricatured academicians as incompetent builders or painters, their tools scattered and useless. A small, energetic figure at right contrasts with the bumbling elders—a visual argument about institutional decay and generational failure. The print belongs to the 19th-century European tradition of political and institutional satire descended from Hogarth and Gillray. Dutch *spotprenten* (satirical prints) used exaggerated physiognomy and physical comedy to mock public figures and bureaucracies. Wood engraving allowed sharp detail and mass distribution. Here, crude caricature serves institutional critique: authority figures rendered grotesque to undermine their credibility and expose administrative incompetence to public ridicule.
