Spotprent op de uitbreiding van het Vondelpark te Amsterdam
This Dutch satirical print mocks the expansion of Amsterdam's Vondelpark. A crowned woman—representing the city or its pretensions—stands atop elevated ground, her elongated nose extending across the landscape like a surveyor's line. Below, tiny figures labor amid construction and water. The engraving technique, with its fine cross-hatching and linear perspective, recalls the Northern European tradition of political satire stretching from Hogarth through Daumier. The exaggerated physiognomy targeting an individual or institution reflects nineteenth-century print culture's reliance on physical caricature to convey social critique. The Dutch text—'Hear me say what is new, or say it myself'—suggests anxiety about urban development and the voices claiming authority over Amsterdam's transformation.
