Satire on the Voluntary 3% Loan Campaign of 1844
· 1844

This wood-engraved page from a Dutch satirical broadsheet mocks the government's 1844 campaign to attract voluntary investment in a 3% state loan. The compositions show ordinary citizens—a laborer, a cow, a family—caught in the machinery of financial coercion disguised as patriotic duty. A price table lists escalating investment tiers, from modest sums to vast amounts, exposing the pressure placed on different social classes to contribute. The tradition of such satirical sheets—using sequential scenes, caricatured figures, and visual wit to expose political hypocrisy—descends from Hogarth and Gillray and feeds directly into the modern comic strip. Here, the satire targets not individuals but a system extracting wealth through manufactured consent.
