Dutch Political Satire on the Voluntary 3% Loan of 1844
This wood-engraved page from a Dutch satirical broadsheet mocks the government's campaign for a purportedly "voluntary" public loan. The sequential panels—a direct ancestor of the modern comic strip—show citizens of different classes coerced into "donating." Sketched figures display the stock types of nineteenth-century caricature: the laborer, the widow, the merchant. The compositions echo Hogarth's narrative sequences and Daumier's social critique, translating political outrage into accessible visual narrative. Such satirical sheets, mass-produced and distributed widely, formed the popular tradition from which comics emerged, combining word and image to expose official hypocrisy through humor and exaggeration.
