Satire on the Voluntary 3% Loan of 1844
· 1844

This Dutch wood engraving ridicules a state financial scheme disguised as voluntary. Multiple scenes depict citizens coerced into "contributing" to a government loan, their arms twisted by officials and commissioners. The satire follows the tradition of Gillray and Rowlandson—using exaggerated figures, physical comedy, and sequential narrative to expose bureaucratic fraud. The Bilderbogen format (picture-sheet with numbered scenes and explanatory text) was standard for popular political critique across Northern Europe. Here, ordinary people—workers, the elderly, the poor—suffer while authorities profit, a class-conscious commentary on taxation and state power dressed as humor.
