Satire on the 1844 'Voluntary' 3% Loan Campaign
This Dutch wood engraving mocks the government's coercive fund-raising scheme disguised as voluntary public subscription. Multiple scenes depict officials pressuring citizens and merchants into contributing to a supposedly optional 150-million-guilder loan. The prints employ the tradition of political satire established by Hogarth and Gillray—sequential narrative panels and exaggerated figures expose corruption and hypocrisy. The wood-engraved technique allowed rapid, affordable distribution as broadsheet satire. Such images, circulating widely among literate and working classes, served as vehicles for social critique and political commentary, precursors to the sequential storytelling that would later define comic strips and graphic narrative.
