Dutch Night-Mare: Of the Fraternal Hug Returned with a Dutch Squeeze
· 1813

This hand-colored etching depicts Napoleon's embrace of the Dutch through grotesque caricature. A bloated Dutchman, labeled "Orange Boy," grapples with a skeletal French soldier in a royal tent. The print employs the visual language perfected by Gillray and Rowlandson: exaggerated physiques, satiric heraldry, and explicit political theater. Published during the Napoleonic Wars' final phase, it ridicules the forced union through contrasting figures of a corpulent Dutch burgher and a cadaverous Frenchman. This tradition of satirical engraving fed directly into nineteenth-century editorial cartooning and eventually sequential comic imagery, establishing caricature as a primary weapon of political commentary.
