Spotprent op de douaniers [Political Print on the Customs Officers]
This hand-colored etching or lithograph mocks Dutch customs officials during the Napoleonic period, depicting them as rigid, uniform bureaucrats surrounding a merchant or smuggler in civilian dress. The print satirizes state authority through exaggerated military posture and regimented repetition—visual tactics inherited from Gillray and Rowlandson. Such popular prints, distributed as single sheets across Europe, formed the visual language that would evolve into modern comics: caricature, sequential narrative, and pointed social commentary compressed into a single frame. The genre offered a sharp tool for critiquing power through distortion and humor.
