Spotprent op de pogingen de Oranjeboom omver te trekken
This Dutch engraving depicts a crowd of figures attempting to uproot a sturdy tree—an allegorical representation of the House of Orange during the tumultuous 1790s. The tree, firmly planted and leafy, resists their efforts while armed defenders and onlookers populate the open field. The print employs satirical imagery common to 18th-century European political prints, following traditions established by Hogarth and developed by Gillray and Rowlandson. Such engravings combined crude caricature, exaggeration, and symbolic imagery to mock political opponents and shore up support for rival factions. The print exemplifies how satirical engraving functioned as mass political propaganda—a direct precursor to the comic strip tradition.
