De bedotte Kees (The Threatened Kees)
This Dutch etching depicts a figure confronted by an eagle perched on a rifle bayonet. The scene unfolds over ground labeled with French revolutionary concepts: "Défense de l'Etat-Union," "Déclaration," and "Alliance & Fraternité." Dutch text below critiques political upheaval and foreign influence. The print exemplifies late-18th-century satirical print culture, where symbolic animals conveyed political commentary. The etching technique and composition recall the caricature traditions of Hogarth and Gillray, establishing visual conventions that would flow into political cartooning and eventually comic art.
