The Vanity of Patriot Hopes for French Aid

The Vanity of Patriot Hopes for French Aid
This etching depicts a woman in classical dress (representing the Dutch Patriot cause) standing on a pedestal, holding a shovel and a rooster—symbols of manual labor and empty boasting. She is surrounded by dancing figures in characteristic dress, likely representing the Patriots themselves. The print mocks the Patriots' hopes for French military support during the Dutch political crisis of the 1780s, suggesting their optimism was foolish vanity. The work belongs to the tradition of Dutch political satire that paralleled Gillray and Rowlandson's British prints—using exaggerated figures, classical allegory, and crude caricature to attack opponents. The etched technique allowed rapid dissemination of partisan images.
