Verklaring der Kunstprent, getyteld: De Afgedankte Pedagoog, door Cato Batavus
This Dutch satirical print explanation attacks the Duke of Brunswick's departure from the Netherlands through allegory. The text, printed in dense letterpress, decodes a visual satire (not shown here) that branded the departing military leader a failed tutor—incompetent pedagogue—to the nation. The print exemplifies the Dutch political cartoon tradition of the 1780s, when Batavian Revolution ferment generated pointed visual propaganda. Like the English caricatures of Gillray and Rowlandson, Dutch satirists employed exaggeration, symbolic figures, and scatological humor to mock authority. This explanation sheet itself—a common format for unpacking elaborate satirical imagery—reveals how 18th-century prints required textual scaffolding for their densely layered political claims, a precursor to the sequential narrative and dialogue of later comic forms.
