Explanation of the Print, Peace of 1783
This Dutch satirical broadside celebrates the Treaty of Paris ending the American Revolutionary War. The text-heavy format—numbered explanations keyed to figures in an accompanying print—derives from Northern European print traditions established by sixteenth-century Reformation broadsheets and refined through the 1700s. Rather than a single unified scene, the print functions as political commentary broken into discrete episodes, each labeled for the reader's interpretation. This didactic approach, popular in Dutch and German popular prints, preceded the narrative sequencing of modern comics. The broadside format itself represents a democratic medium: cheaply produced, widely distributed, and designed for public consumption. Such prints circulated political argument outside elite circles, establishing visual satire as a tool for shaping public opinion on war, peace, and national interest.
