De wereld is een speeltoneel (The World Is a Play)
This Dutch engraving presents the world as a theatrical stage, with a central scene of moral chaos framed by architectural ornament. Eight vignettes around the borders show scenes of drinking, gambling, seduction, and violence—social folly rendered as dark comedy. The Latin verses below moralize on human vice. Produced as a copper engraving in the tradition of Northern European moral satire, this print inherits the allegorical frame and sequential narrative panels that Hogarth would later perfect. The format anticipates the Bilderbogen picture-sheets popular in 19th-century German printmaking: multiple scenes unified by theme, designed for popular consumption and moral instruction through visual wit rather than refined allegory. Here, the comedy of human degradation serves didactic ends—satirizing excess across all social ranks.
