Uitslag van de windnegotie (Outcome of the Wind Negotiation)
This Dutch engraving satirizes financial speculation during the South Sea Bubble crisis. A crowded street scene depicts merchants, investors, and common folk engaged in frenzied trading, with figures gesturing wildly, money changing hands, and a windmill—symbolizing worthless air—dominating the composition. The dense composition and multiple narrative vignettes reflect the Northern European satirical print tradition, which combined moral instruction with popular entertainment. Below, explanatory verses in Dutch guide viewers through the chaos. Such prints, descended from 16th-century broadsheets and perfected by artists across the Low Countries, Germany, and England, established conventions—exaggerated features, social types, crowded scenes—that would eventually inform the sequential narratives of comic strips and comic books.
