French Defeats in Brabant, Barcelona, and Italy

This Dutch engraving satirizes French military failures during the War of Spanish Succession. The central scene depicts a chaotic court where Paspuin (a stock comic character) confronts authority figures amid reports of lost territories. The composition combines narrative text in Dutch and Italian with an etched central vignette—a format typical of early 18th-century political prints circulating across the Low Countries and Italy. Such prints belonged to a vital tradition of satirical graphic commentary predating modern comics. Like later work by Gillray and Daumier, these engravings used exaggeration, stock types, and visual jokes to mock leaders and military disasters for ordinary readers. The multi-lingual text and distributed format made them instruments of propaganda and public opinion in an age before newspapers.
