Emperor Joseph I Confronting Pope Clement XI and King Louis XIV
This Dutch engraving satirizes diplomatic tensions between the Holy Roman Emperor Joseph I and his Catholic rivals, Pope Clement XI and France's Louis XIV. An angel assists Joseph while papal and royal attendants counsel their masters, the cityscape of Rome visible behind. The print employs the allegorical mode common to early 18th-century political satire, where personified powers and their supernatural helpers embody state conflict. Rendered in fine engraving with Latin and Dutch inscriptions, it inherits the tradition of emblematic prints used across Northern Europe to comment on religious and dynastic rivalry. Such satirical sheets—precursors to later caricature and comic narrative—reached broad audiences and shaped how people visualized power struggles.
