French Obstruction of English-Dutch Trade Negotiations
This Dutch etching satirizes French interference in peace negotiations between England and the Dutch Republic. A crowned figure on a rearing horse—representing French power—gestures wildly while pointing at distant figures and ruins. Smaller figures observe from left and right, witnessing the disruption of diplomatic efforts. The engraving exemplifies 17th-century political satire's direct visual language: exaggerated gesture, symbolic placement, and layered action convey complex diplomatic conflict to a broad audience. Printed text below amplifies the visual argument. This tradition of topical prints, combining observation of contemporary politics with caricatural exaggeration, established conventions that would evolve through Hogarth, Gillray, and Rowlandson into the modern comic form.
