Trevrfeest der Calvinisten (Calvinist Celebration)
This Dutch etching depicts a raucous outdoor festival celebrating the loss of Breda, likely responding to the 1624 Spanish recapture of the city. The composition follows Reformation-era broadsheet tradition, with numbered vignettes showing figures engaged in drinking, dancing, and mayhem. The print employs grotesque distortion and slapstick chaos. Such polemical etchings were mass-produced in religious conflict, combining image and text to shape public opinion. This tradition of topical satire directly precedes the political comics of later centuries.
